Emotional Intelligence

Every Tuesday we share with you a short review of a business book as our book recommendation of the week. This week it is Daniel Goleman’s bestseller “Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ”.

“In a very real sense we have two minds, one that thinks and one that feels”

Written by Daniel Goleman, an internationally known psychologist and lecturer, Emotional Intelligence is a manual on how to manage your emotions. The book reflects on the idea that high IQ is not a guarantee for success – in fact, IQ is just one amongst several other types of intelligence. Applying intelligence to emotion is what can make the real difference. So, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence in order to show how they determine our success in relationships, work, and well-being. They are: self-awareness (the ability to recognize and understand personal moods, emotions and drives), self-regulation (controlling or redirecting disruptive impulses and moods), internal motivation (a passion to work for internal reasons that go beyond money and status), empathy (the ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people), and social skills (proficiency in managing relationships and building networks, and an ability to find common ground and build rapport).

By focusing on the evolution of brain mechanisms for emotional and rational behaviour, the book provides practical steps for living better. That is, by developing our Emotional Intelligence in the five aforementioned domains we can become more productive and successful at what we do, as well as help others succeed. The book can also help you address such issues as reducing stress and decreasing conflict. Basically, what Goleman argues is that self-control, zeal and persistence are the main features of success.

First published in 1995, Emotional Intelligence is one of the most successful self-help books. It stayed on the New York Times bestsellers list for a year-and-a-half and has proven to have a considerable impact on the workplace and business world.
